2020 Back to School Outreach Recap

World Changers Church–New York hosted its annual “Because We Care” Back 2 School Giveaway on August 29, 2020. This year’s event was particularly special because many families with school-aged children have been faced with financial uncertainties due to the covid-19 pandemic. However, World Changers Nation volunteers were committed to supporting to these families and simply doing the work that God has called us to do—being our brother’s keeper. The Bible tells us all in Proverbs 3:27, “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.”

We required masks and were able to provide them on-site for all that showed up to participate for the event. To do our due diligence in keeping all in attendance safe, we only had six volunteers so that we could maintain social distancing while spacing ourselves at least six feet apart. Book bags were filled with school supplies that could be used whether a child would be learning from home or attending in-person classes. To assist students and their families in following CDC guidelines for covid-19 prevention, masks and hand sanitizer were included for each student.

While the event looked a bit different this year, it was a heartfelt success. We were able to support and serve 84 families at the WCCNY Community Outreach Hub. A total of 162 children received free book bags and much-needed school supplies. This event allowed the community to see and experience the love and grace of God. As students received their supplies, members of our team prayed for them and their families for the 2020-2021 school year.

The feedback we received was positive. Many expressed their thankfulness that we have been consistent in the community over the years, not only providing school supplies, but also being equipped and willing to help meet other community needs. One gentleman stated that he wasn’t financially able to provide school supplies for his children, and was very grateful that the church was still helping the community in a time of great need. That is what ministry is all about—meeting the needs of our brothers and sisters. God was with us, and the atmosphere was so peaceful that even a little rain didn’t stop the show.

World Changers appreciates every volunteer that served and every person that made a donation. Collectively, we make great impact. As we brace for a new year and even more unprecedented times, we know that nothing can stop the love of Christ from going forth for His people. As we continue loving young people, we are helping to shape their futures. According to Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” It’s been said that it takes a village to raise a child; we’re all in this together because we are part of that village.
