One Ministry, One Church, One Message Worldwide
Many of us may remember the old Charlie Brown cartoons in which Lucy would set up a psychiatrist’s booth with a sign that read “The doctor is in.” Charlie would come to confide in Lucy and she would tell him that as long as he admitted he had a problem he wasn’t too far gone. Like Charlie, we can also find ourselves struggling with depression, worry, fear, or other emotional pain that life can inflict on us. When we go to God and admit we have a problem, He’ll always be waiting for us and ready to help.
God is referred to as the great physician because He’s the master healer. Entrusting our mental and emotional health to Him allows Him to heal us from the inside out and restore wholeness to us on every level, with nothing missing and nothing broken. Depression, anxiety, or any other type of mental illness doesn’t stand a chance against the peace God brings when we give our minds to Him. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
We don’t have to look too far to see the effect fear has on people. Fear paralyzes us emotionally and holds us back from doing what we know we should do. It’s a demonic spirit that directly opposes what God wants to accomplish in our lives. When our emotions turn against us, what God has to offer us is stronger than what the enemy tries to use against us. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
Sickness and disease aren’t God’s will for us and, during His ministry, Jesus proved it by restoring people back to their right minds. The evil spirits behind illness were forced to leave when Jesus confronted them (Matthew 8:16; Luke 8:26-36), and it’s ironic that those who witnessed Him casting out an entire league of demons from a man were afraid. We never have to be afraid to prayerfully ask Jesus for healing, but when we see it happen we know who’s responsible for it.
Doctors and health care professionals are certainly necessary, but it’s important to remember who ultimately empowers them with their gifts of healing. “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise” (Jeremiah 17:14). When we’re caught in the grips of something and nothing the doctors do makes a difference, God can deliver us from sickness. His power extends over every human effort and He’s the one who gets the credit for everything good.
Two thousand years ago, Jesus gave His life-changing healing power to anyone who believed in Him. “And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease” (Matthew 10:1). He didn’t just give it to His disciples, but to everyone who trusted Him for their healing. This power is just as strong today as it was then, and it’s available to us through faith in Jesus. God’s plans for us don’t include anything less than perfect health, and relying on Him brings healing when and where we desperately need it.
