The True Source of Healing and Wholeness

It’s unrealistic to expect to go through life without its inevitable pains and injuries, both physical and emotional. Everyone needs healing at some point, but many people don’t understand the spiritual basis for it. Healing flows through doctors and health care providers, but God is the ultimate source of health and wholeness. Religion acknowledges this but adds that sometimes healing isn’t His will; however, nothing could be further from the truth.

The notion that somehow God is punishing us or wants to teach us a lesson by allowing us to remain sick is unscriptural. We make a mistake if we think that it’s His will to heal others, but not us. Two thousand years ago, Jesus made healing available to everyone who believes in what He did on the cross. God doesn’t pick and choose between individuals. “For there is no partiality with God” (Romans 2:11, NKJV).

If we stay sick, it’s because we don’t understand His will for our health. God wants us all to be abundantly healthy, but we block any healing that can take place when we doubt what He says concerning this area. “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). God wants more for us than to simply exist; He wants us to experience a rich, satisfying life bursting with good health. When we believe this strongly enough, we follow through with acts of faith including healthy living and positive thinking, which reduce the likelihood of sickness or disease taking hold of us.

There will be times when the doctors give us a bad report. At times like these, we can choose whether we believe them, or believe God. The doctors may have the best of intentions, but they don’t know what God, the great physician, knows. Whatever treatments or medications we need, we move forward in the faith that our healing is already done, regardless of what it looks like right now. “Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy]. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole” (Isaiah 53:4, 5, AMPC).

It’s no accident that this Scripture mentions peace with healing. When we don’t have God’s promise of healing to rest on, we have no peace of mind. Our minds are powerful tools to assist in the healing process, and when we know this, we’re in a better position to agree with God for our wholeness and soundness. “A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22, AMPC). It’s not easy being cheerful when we’re diagnosed with something, but it’s a work of faith that God honors.

God’s promises of healing are for everyone who believes in them, not for just a chosen few. When someone suggests otherwise, they’re uninformed. There’s no room for doubt to creep in when we need those promises the most. God will never let us down when we trust Him.
