Seeking Safety In The Rock

It’s a tough world we live in, and in the natural realm there is plenty to fear. Most people live in this realm, and they work hard to try to ensure their own safety. However, God wants to give us supernatural protection so all-encompassing that we’ll never again have to be afraid. God offers this benefit out of His love for us; all we need to do to receive it is to trust that He wants us safe.

If we don’t understand the word “supernatural,” we may think of it as something spooky or ghostly, but there’s nothing spooky about it. God operates in the supernatural, far above human capacity. Depending on Him for our safety is like standing on a rock stronger than we could ever imagine. “Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal” (Isaiah 26:4, NIV).

There’s nothing wrong with using common sense to stay safe, but some people go overboard. Most of us have seen people who live in fear of everything, to the point that it affects their quality of life. When we let fear take over, we lose our peace of mind. Asking God for help allows Him to get involved in this area. “Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all” (2 Thessalonians 3:16).

Fear is actually emotionally painful. God loves us, and He doesn’t want us to suffer like this. When we’re afraid for our safety, the last thing we feel like doing is singing for joy. God’s will for us is to rely on Him to such a degree that we find deep and lasting joy in His presence. “O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms” (Psalm 95:1, 2).

In life, there will always be an opportunity to be afraid of something; however, fear is not from God. When we believe that He wants to keep us safe, we find courage and power that’s stronger than fear. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). Believing God for our safety strengthens our minds against the paralyzing effects of fear.

No matter what message the world gives us, we don’t have to accept constant threats and danger as part of life. God offers us peace, not chaos or confusion. “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…” (1 Corinthians 14:33). Developing the reflex action of automatically going to Him in the same way we would take cover behind a large, solid rock during an attack is reassuring and comforting.

During His ministry, Jesus told His disciples that trusting God brings a peace that defies all human understanding. We can confidently rest assured of this. “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Accepting Christ as our Savior gives us an advantage the world can never comprehend. When others are operating with no real protection, we have all the benefits of the Rock, Himself.
