Most of us don’t give much thought to the source of our good health. When we get injured or sick, we head to the doctor for the mending of broken bones or treatment of whatever sickness or illness we have. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but there’s only so much human beings can do to heal us. When our need exceeds what even the best of doctors can provide, going to God’s Word gives us wholeness.
Every life has its share of pain and brokenness; Jesus came to soothe, comfort, and restore the missing health and vitality we need. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5, NKJV). Jesus endured beatings, physical abuse, and death on a cross so that we could inherit this promise. Healing comes in many forms; sometimes we need emotional or psychological healing, so it’s no coincidence that God placed peace and healing in the same Scripture.
God is the very essence of healing. One of the reasons Jesus came to earth was to give us life and save us from sin, the spiritual sickness that separates us from God. “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave” (Psalm 107:19, 20, NIV). Jesus didn’t have to take on a human form, heal us, and give us eternal life, but He chose to because of His great love for us.
We don’t have peace when we or our loved ones are sick. Instead, we may feel anxiety, fear, stress, and even anger. In the Old Testament, God promised the prophet Jeremiah that He would heal His people; this promise still holds true today. “Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth” (Jeremiah 33:6). It’s no coincidence that the words “health” and “peace” are paired together in this verse. Trusting that this biblical promise is true lets us experience an amazing peace of mind that only comes from God.
The question isn’t if, but when, we’ll need divine intervention for our healing. When the woman with the issue of blood had gone to doctors for twelve years, none of them had been able to help. She went to Jesus, touched His robe, and was instantly healed. “And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague” (Mark 5:34). The connection between faith and healing is real.
Believing in something or someone long enough enables us to see the physical manifestations of that belief. Jesus was constantly healing people during His ministry; one of the most powerful demonstrations of God’s healing Word was documented when a soldier asked Jesus to heal his servant, and Jesus agreed. “The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed… When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel... And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour” (Matthew 8:8, 10, 13). Our faith in God’s love is the key to supernatural healing.
