Daily Devotionals - May 2019

May 31

“For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise” (Hebrews 10:36).

Patience is not simply “putting up with” something; it is remaining constantly, consistently the same in all situations. Patience is faith that is consistently applied over a period of time.

“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:2).

Faith and grace always operate together; our faith takes what God’s grace has made available to us. Jesus is grace in human form; because of what He did, we can joyfully stand in God’s presence.

May 29

“For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love” (Galatians 5:6).

Nothing in God’s kingdom operates without love, faith, and patience. If we believe that God loves us, we will be able to correctly respond to His promises.

May 28

“Seeing, therefore, it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief” (Hebrews 4:6).

We must not allow unbelief to steal the peace of mind that God’s promises bring. Resting confidently in His Word is the true test of whether or not we really believe.

May 27

“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you” (Matthew 17:20).

Our faith carries great power. When we employ it consistently, faith will produce extraordinary results.

May 26

“For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith” (Mark 11:23).

There’s no need to “climb the mountain” by putting up with a bad situation when we can move the mountain aside with a word spoken in faith. This is the authority God has given to believers.

“For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh” (Proverbs 4:22).

The Bible is full of promises; when we have a problem, we can respond by finding the specific Scripture in the Word of God that pertains to our situation. Each promise has the power to change our lives, if we believe it.

May 24

“And David enquired at the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all” (1 Samuel 30:8).

One way of responding to God’s promises is to actively pursue them. Reaching out for them is an act of faith.

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord” (Isaiah 54:17).

When we trust in God, we never have to worry about evil showing up in our lives, or even about any evil thing someone may say about us. He is our ultimate source of safety and protection.
22May

May 22

“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions” (Psalm 107:20).

Jesus Christ is the Word that God sent to us. When Christ is in us, we have healing and deliverance from trouble.
21May

May 21

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Joshua 1:8).

To meditate means to ponder something and roll it over in our minds; we have a choice of what we to meditate on. Listening to the world’s messages can cause us pain and frustration, but focusing on God’s Word gives us hope and joy.
20May

May 20

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit” (Romans 8:5, NKJV).

“The flesh” is a mindset that goes against the Word of God. Living according to this mindset blocks us from hearing from the Holy Spirit.
19May

May 19

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Constantly studying and meditating on God’s Word helps us develop a personal relationship with Him. The deeper our relationship becomes, the more our faith grows.
18May

May 18

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12).

If we ignore what the Holy Spirit tells us, and instead stubbornly insist on going our own way, our destination won’t be pleasant. Thankfully, God always allows U-turns.
17May

May 17

“Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners and morals and character” (1 Corinthians 15:33, AMPC).

Who we spend time with influences us and can determine the course of our lives. It’s important to choose our friends wisely.
16May

May 16

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (Ephesians 6:18).

We add power to our prayer lives when we pray in tongues; praying in the Spirit is communing directly with God. When praying for others, we must persevere in our watchfulness against spiritual attacks from the enemy.
15May

May 15

“For when God made a promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise” (Hebrews 6:13-15).

Faith takes what God’s grace has made available, regardless of how long it takes to see the manifestations of His Word. Abraham’s patience was simply faith applied over a long period of time.
14May

May 14

“And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified” (Acts 20:32).

When we entrust ourselves to God, we position ourselves to be strengthened by His Word. Our inheritance includes a victorious, transformed life in Christ.
13May

May 13

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever” (1 Peter 1:23).

When we got saved, the Word of God was planted in our hearts as a seed and produced the harvest of being born again. The Word eventually causes us to bear spiritual fruit others can see, if we do not uproot the seed.
12May

May 12

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8).

What we think determines what we do. Believers are called to think differently than the world; this means that when the world is focused on anger, malice, and negativity, we can focus on peace, joy, and victory.
11May

May 11

“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8).

When we go to God in prayer, we must pray in faith with no trace of doubt. Unbelief cancels our faith and prevents us from being stabilized in Christ.
10May

May 10

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

We receive a new beginning when we get born again. This new beginning allows us to leave behind all the mistakes and bad choices we’ve ever made: God wipes the slate clean.
09May

May 9

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:1, 2).

To prosper is to succeed and get results. Our souls prosper when we set our minds on Christ, not on what is going on around us at the moment.
08May

May 8

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).

When we confess our faults and shortcomings openly to another believer, we position ourselves for God to change us for the better. Prayer is powerful, and it puts in motion spiritual forces for good.
07May

May 7

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

God’s Word planted in us makes our souls prosperous. A prosperous soul chooses to seek out the things of God.
06May

May 6

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 1:2).

This is God’s will for His children. He does not want us to struggle in any area of life; there is nothing wrong with receiving prosperity from Him on every level.
05May

May 5

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2).

God’s presence in us makes us holy and sets us apart from the world. This holiness includes letting His Word transform our minds and teach us to think differently than everyone else.
04May

May 4

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1).

When we get born again, God, Himself, comes to live in us. His presence makes our bodies a holy temple; this is all the more reason to take care of ourselves and lead a healthy lifestyle.

03May

May 3

“Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21, NKJV).

Accepting Jesus brings salvation for our souls. We don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to receive salvation; we can receive it right now. It has the power to begin transforming our lives immediately.
02May

May 2

“[Now] we have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps out upon it—a hope] that reaches farther and enters into [the very certainty of the Presence] within the veil” (Hebrews 6:19, AMPC).

Similar to an anchor that keeps a ship from drifting away, God’s Word anchors our souls. Our hope is a confident expectation that we can always depend on Him.
01May

May 1

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12, NKJV).

We are spiritual beings; when our spirits are dead, God’s Word brings them back to life. His Word revitalizes our souls and transforms us.
