Biblical Servanthood

Print
We live in an environment that has no idea what it means to be a servant. Servanthood has a negative connotation in most people’s minds because they don’t understand its biblical significance as taught by Jesus Christ, the most powerful and influential servant in all of history. The world’s mindset embraces the idea of being the leader, the head, or the boss; however, Jesus modeled a radically different concept. The most successful leaders understand the necessity of having a servant’s heart, like Jesus had.

Anyone not willing to humbly serve has no business being a leader. Biblical servanthood is the opposite of being self-centered; it’s all about putting others first. Jesus created all things in heaven and in the earth, and He is preeminent. However, when He did come down from heaven, He didn’t come to be served, but to serve others and give His life as a ransom for many.
Servanthood is the perfect preparation for leadership the way God sees it. Jesus cautioned His disciples not to be the same kind of leaders they observed in the world. He pointed out how the rulers of the Gentiles lorded over them, and added that whoever would be chief would be everyone’s servant. Leading with the proper mindset and the right heart is how we demonstrate God’s grace to the world.

Plenty of people wanting to lead have a “push your way to the top of the pack” mentality, which goes against what Jesus taught. His kind of leadership teaches us that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The world’s way leads to strife; God’s Word tells us to esteem each other better than ourselves.

Serving others allows God to elevate us to leadership. We’ve been called to freedom, but we must use this freedom to serve one another in love. When we learn this spiritual law, God can use us mightily.

Prayer:

Lord, as Your children we’ve been called to represent You in a world that doesn’t even know You. That’s a tall order, but Your favor toward us enables us to do that. Thank You for teaching us to lead by following Your example of humble servanthood. In Jesus’ name, amen.
