On our Christian journey, what we say ultimately determines our destination in life. Our words can either work for us or against us; we therefore must pay close attention to what comes out of our mouth. If we examine ourselves and are shocked to discover that we’ve fallen into speaking like the world, we must avoid thinking that our own efforts in changing this trait can bring success. It all starts with faith in God’s Word and our willingness to confess who it says we are in Christ.

Our words carry great power; we can speak either healing, deliverance, and success, or negative things that bring destruction into our lives. In the beginning, God created the entire universe by speaking it into existence. He has given us the same power, and we’re responsible for using it correctly. Our tongue may be small in size, but it can boast and brag and start a forest fire in others’ lives that’s hard to put out.

We’ve been commanded to speak in agreement with God’s Word. We’re to let no corrupt communication proceed out of our mouth, only what edifies others so that it may minister grace to the hearers. That’s a tall order, and impossible to do without God’s help.

What we believe determines what we say; letting the Holy Spirit work on what’s in our hearts brings our confessions in line with God’s grace. The Spirit reminds us of God’s love for us; this has a way of making us want to say things pleasing to Him. Asking God to let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart be acceptable in His sight is a powerful confession He’ll surely respond to.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. God has set before us life and death; He tells us to choose life, so that we and our descendants can live. The choice is ours; much is hanging in the balance.

Prayer:

Lord, our words matter greatly, and we can choose to speak either blessings or curses. Thank You for giving us Your Word of grace to teach us the power of what we confess. In Jesus’ name, amen.
