Relationships and gender roles in the world are far from perfect. We’ve become accustomed to unequal relationships between men and women, but the inequalities we see now haven’t always been that way. When God created Adam and Eve and put them in the garden of Eden, He made them in His own image, and as equals. When they ate of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, sin spoiled the perfect relationship they had with God and with each other; the result was man’s domination of woman.

This imbalance existed for many generations, until Jesus came to set things right and restore gender equality the way the Father originally intended. Women were seen as inferior, but God made a powerful statement about gender equality when Jesus was born of a woman who was considered second-class. The world into which He was born had a patriarchal view of women, so Jesus showed grace to them while modeling examples of equality for everyone. He did this by healing the woman with an issue of blood, casting out demons from a woman, and ministering to the outcast Samaritan woman at the well.

Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, gender equality has been restored. He has abolished the enmity between men and women that had existed since the garden of Eden, and there are now no more walls separating the genders; neither is there male nor female in Him. Everyone can now pursue God’s calling in their lives and push past the limitations that society tries to apply. The world has no idea that Jesus has leveled the playing field for women as well as men; therefore, it’s up to us as believers to demonstrate it through our godly relationships.

Lord, Your Son restored Your original plan for the relationship You want to have with mankind. In Christ, we’re all equal in Your eyes. We’re thankful for this. In Jesus’ name, amen.
