The Gift of Speaking in Tongues

Print
Our prayer lives are an important part of our Christian walk. A critical component of our conversations with God is the ability to pray in the Spirit. Speaking in tongues is a grace gift directly from the Holy Spirit; however, widespread misunderstanding of it exists. We don’t have to be afraid of it or question whether people still do this; tongues are just as valid today as they were at the time of the first Pentecost.

After Jesus’ resurrection, the Holy Ghost filled the disciples and caused them to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance; those hearing them were amazed. Some people doubted the authenticity of this type of prayer, while others mocked them. Likewise, when we pray in tongues, others may not understand what we’re doing. As believers, we can disregard scoffing and skepticism, because we have something powerful at our disposal that others don’t.

Praying in tongues is a supernatural gift, far above the natural realm in which the world operates. The natural man doesn’t receive the things of the Spirit of God because they are foolishness to him; he doesn’t know them because they are spiritually discerned. The person who speaks in an unknown tongue doesn’t speak to men, but to God. In the spirit, that individual speaks mysteries.

Tongues allow us to pray the perfect prayer. They bypass intellectual reasoning and unlock the wisdom and knowledge God put in us that we may not even know we have. Tongues were given to us specifically to use while we’re still living in an imperfect world operating with our own imperfect knowledge; when we get to heaven, we won’t need it any more. When that which is perfect is come, that which is in part will be done away with.

We can depend on the Holy Spirit to build up our faith. We can trust Him to give us what we need on a daily basis. Speaking in tongues is critical to our success.

Prayer:

God, there are things in life that we don’t know that can be made plain to us by praying in the Holy Spirit. Speaking in tongues gives us insight, wisdom, and knowledge the world doesn’t have. Thank You for this gift. In Jesus’ name, amen.
