The Heart: The Gateway to Life

Print

Life is what we make it, and God has given every one of us the chance to choose for ourselves what kind of lives we want. Our destination on the path we choose isn’t determined by external circumstances, but by the condition of our hearts. God’s Word is like seed we plant in our hearts, but neglecting to study our Bibles and meditate on what we read is like a farmer who never gets a harvest because he refuses to take the bag of seed out of the barn to plant it.

As free moral agents, we can either decide to accept God’s grace or reject it. The choices we make turn on spiritual laws that either work for us or against us. God has set before us life and death, blessing and cursing, but He tells us to choose life. As His children, we’re wise to pay attention to what He says, and keep our heart with all diligence, for out of it come the issues of life.

What we hear and see eventually finds its way into our hearts. What goes into us determines how we think, and what we say and do; in this respect, our lives are the sum total of what is in our hearts. With the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. There’s no denying the powerful link between what goes into us and what comes out of us.

We’re built up and strengthened when we commend ourselves to God and the Word of His grace, and trusting in His promises gives us an inheritance among the saints. These promises include peace, joy, and victory over adversity. They were given to us to impact our lives right now, as an ever-present help in times of trouble. Heaven is certainly in our futures; in the meantime, entrusting our hearts to God’s Word allows us to enjoy our lives here on earth.

Prayer:

God, it’s entirely up to us to decide what we want to plant in our hearts, but what type of seed we sow determines what kind of harvest we reap. Your Word is filled with promises of good things for those who accept them, and we’re thankful for the Holy Spirit who helps us in this area. In Jesus’ name, amen.
