The “Why” That Guides What We Do

Print
We may not think much about it, but there’s a reason behind everything we do. Sometimes the motives behind our actions aren’t even rational, yet they’re still a powerful influence on our behavior. Knowing what drives us gives us insight into why we take a course of action that either ends well or is counterproductive. Looking at it from a biblical perspective, our motives can be either pure or impure.

What makes someone “tick” is defined as the thing that causes them to behave a certain way; specifically, their feelings, opinions, or concerns that are part of their personality. However, this definition goes even deeper than personality; it has its roots in what motivates us. Our motivations can either be based on fleshly things, or on spiritual matters. Those who live by the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

There’s a definite link between our thoughts and our hearts, and eventually our actions; whatever motivates us in our hearts are the things we end up doing. If we have bitter envy and selfish ambition in our hearts, we mustn’t boast about it; those emotions aren’t from heaven, but are earthly. Where we find those motives, we also find disorder and every evil practice.

God warns us not to do anything through strife, which springs from impure motives. Anyone with a proud heart stirs up strife; thankfully, the Spirit of Grace works in us to change our hearts and turn them back to God. The Spirit can do things we can’t, including transforming us from the inside. Following His prompting gives us real success in life.

Prayer:

Lord, the motives behind our decisions are powerful enough to influence the direction of our lives. We can succeed or fail based on our motivations. Studying and applying Your Word guards us against the dangers of impure motives. Thank You for Your guidance and protection in this area. In Jesus’ name, amen.
