Understanding the Truth of the Gospel

Print

The proper understanding of an important concept gives us confidence and empowers us to apply it correctly. This is especially true when it comes to understanding what God says to us through His Word. There’s a right way and a wrong way to read the Bible, and the difference between the interpretations can be like the difference between night and day. Rightly dividing the Word of truth, like workmen who need not be ashamed, requires help from the Holy Spirit.

Unlike the world’s version of truth, which frequently changes, God’s Word is truth that sanctifies believers and separates them from the world. Listening to the Spirit’s interpretation of the gospel reminds us of the Father’s love, mercy, and forgiveness that the finished works of Jesus made available. God’s wrath and judgment that applied under Mosaic Law no longer applies under grace. The correct interpretation of the Word is now seen through the lens of God’s undeserved favor, not according to the punishment the law says we deserve.

After His death and resurrection, Jesus gave understanding of the truth to two of His disciples when He met them walking on the road to Emmaus. Their hearts were moved by Jesus’ presence, and He explained the sense of the Scriptures as they are now, in the New Testament. It’s the same way with us. Our hearts and minds are opened to the correct interpretation of the Scriptures when we yield to the Holy Spirit—also called the Spirit of Grace in Old-Testament prophecies— sent to be the counselor and advocate who teaches us everything we need to know.

Although the world won’t receive Him, the Spirit of truth guides us into all truth. He comforts us and brings to remembrance everything Jesus said. The truth is that God loves us deeply and wants a personal relationship with us. Stripping away religion and seeing Him in light of the Gospel of Grace is guaranteed to change our lives.

Prayer:

Lord, Your Word is full of the truth, which testifies to Your love for us. The Holy Spirit guides us into the correct interpretation of what we read and how to apply it to our lives. Thank You for the understanding You bring. In Jesus’ name, amen.
