Operate from Your True Identity

Knowing our true identity in Christ transforms every area of life. We are no longer defined by sin or self-effort but by God’s declaration that we are righteous, redeemed, and holy. Living from this identity brings peace, freedom, and purpose, allowing Christ to express Himself through us as we simply embrace who we already are.

About the Author:

Day 1The Freedom of Knowing Who We Are in Jesus

One of the greatest revelations we’ll ever receive is discovering who we already are in Christ. Striving through self-effort to become something God has already declared us to be keeps us exhausted and frustrated. Understanding that we’re complete in Him gives life a whole new rhythm—one of rest instead of performance. Knowing that our identity isn’t earned but received changes everything.

Walking in our Jesus identity doesn’t mean pretending to be something we’re not; it means agreeing with what God has already spoken about us. We’ve been crucified with Christ, which means our old inner man is dead and Christ now lives in us. We don’t have to work to become righteous but simply believe what God finished. Replacing striving with believing moves us into a freedom that religion can never give us.

God has declared that we’re righteous. The work of righteousness is peace, and the effect of this righteousness is quietness and assurance forever. This is exactly what our new identity delivers. Boldness comes from the realization that we’re equipped for every good work, just like Jesus; in this world, we livelike Him.

When we begin living from our true identities, freedom becomes our new normal. We’re to stand fast in the liberty Christ has already provided, which means we refuse to be dragged back into performancebased living. God didn’t call us to carry the weight of religious expectations, but to enjoy the life Jesus finished for us.

The shackles of false identity are gone; we can now walk confidently, knowing that our identity isn’t fragile, shifting, or up for debate. We’re anchored in Christ, secured by grace, and empowered by the love. God has already poured out over us. This changes everything, not someday in the future, but right now.

Scriptures:
Galatians 2:20
Isaiah 32:17
2 Timothy 3:17
1 John 4:17, NLT
Galatians 5:1

We live surrounded by people searching for their true identity. As Christians, knowing who we are in Christ gives us a huge advantage. When we understand who God says we are, we stop striving to earn what grace has already given us. As the elect of God, holy, and beloved, we can confidently put on compassion and kindness because it’s already in our spiritual DNA.

Jesus lived His entire life completely aware of His identity, and that’s why His life flowed with such confidence and clarity. He did exactly what He saw His Father do, which means His actions were grounded in His relationship, not His performance. When we know who we belong to, we stop hustlingfor approval. We start living from the security of being connected to the Father.

Even before Jesus began His earthly ministry, God publicly declared who He was. After Jesus was baptized, God opened the heavens and announced, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”Jesus hadn’t performed a single miracle yet; His identity wasn’t tied to His achievements. In the same way, God’s approval of us isn’t earned, but inherited.

Jesus walked with an unshakable awareness that God was always with Him. In one of His many conversations with the Jews, He explained that the Father hadn’t left Him alone; He lived with that confidence every day. Our identity in Christ gives us the same assurance. We’re never abandoned, forgotten, or without His presence. Just before His death, Jesus prayed that we would know that God loves us just as much as He loves Him.

This kind of love shapes our identity from the inside out. Believing we’re loved at that level makes insecurity lose its grip. Knowing the truth about ourselves gives us security the world doesn’t have.

Scriptures:
Colossians 3:12
John 5:19
Matthew 3:16, 17
John 8:29
John 17:23

Some people go through their entire life not knowing who they are. Having spiritual amnesia is tragic, yet this is the norm in our environment. Knowing our true identity in Christ is the foundation of living a peaceful, purposeful life. God clearly loves us; we’re therefore to robe ourselves with His virtues because He has divinely chosen us to be holy.

Growing in our identity reshapes how we approach everyday life. On the job, we’re to work heartily as unto the Lord; this becomes much easier when we understand we’re working from acceptance, not for it. We’ve been made alive unto God and dead to sin, which means that we no longer have to answer to the old version of ourselves. This frees us to live boldly and authentically.

When God raised Jesus, He raised us with Him; we’re now co-rulers with Him, seated with Christ in heavenly places. That’s a position of authority, rest, and victory, not struggle and striving. He’s our peace, and as He is, so are we in this world. Peace isn’t a feeling we chase, but a person who lives in us.

Our identity grows even clearer when we realize how deeply united we are with God. Anyone joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him, which assures us that we’ll never be disconnected or distant from Him. God is love, and everything He is, He has made available in us. We’re the apple of His eye and His beloved; there is therefore no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus, so guilt and shame don’t get to define us.

We aren’t what we do; neither are we what the world tries to tell us. We’re who God says we are. Faith in this gives us great peace.

The beautiful thing about God is that He’s always willing to bring us newness and a better quality of life. This is good news for us because, being human, we can make so many mistakes that we lose hope and think we’ve ruined our lives. Thankfully, we’re not stuck with our old selves. When we get born again, we belong to Christ; we’ve become a new person, and the old life is gone.

We don’t have to keep partnering with past labels, failures, or limitations. God rewrote our identity the moment we said “yes” to Jesus. Not only did He make us new, but He also made each of us one of a kind. We’re God’s masterpiece, created anew in Christ to do the good things He planned for us long ago. A masterpiece isn’t accidental, average, or unfinished—it’s intentional and valuable. When we see ourselves this way, we stop settling for anything less than God’s best.

Identity also comes from knowing who our Father is. Everyone who believes and receives Jesus has the right to become children of God; we therefore don’t have to try to earn sonship, because we’ve been born into it. This truth brings boldness because we’re no longer living like orphans hoping for acceptance. We’re living like a child who already belongs.

God decided our identity early on. He created human beings in His own image, male and female; our design came straight from His heart. We were never created to be a copy of the world or a reflection of its brokenness. We were designed to reflect God’s nature, love, and character.

God has emphatically declared that we’re His. The Spirit Himself bears witness that we’re God’s children and heirs with Christ. Because we’ve been accepted, we can now live the abundant life.

Knowing who we are, beyond a shadow of a doubt, has a way of grounding us and giving us confidence. This is doubly true if we can base our identity in Jesus. This is the key to living the life God intended for us. Jesus defines our identity, not our past; when we’re in Him, we’re brandnew creations, and the old life no longer gets to speak for us.

Before He even formed the world, God had already made up His mind about who we are. He chose us to be holy and without blame in His love; our identity begins in grace, not performance. He made us in His image and likeness, giving us dominion and purpose from the very beginning. So, being in Christ isn’t a downgrade, but a restoration of our original design.

Jesus didn’t just save us but reconnected us to who we were always meant to be. When we got born again, we put on the new man, renewed in knowledge according to the image of our Creator. We’re not trying to become something we’re notour minds are simply catching up to what God already made true. Every day becomes an opportunity to align our thinking with our real identity in Christ.

Believers are decidedly different than the world; as Jesus is, so are we right now. Our resurrected identity is complete, accepted, and empowered in Him, not someday in heaven, but here in this world. We’re His reflection, His children, and His representatives. When we respond to life from this position in Him, confidence replaces fear and boldness replaces insecurity.

Jesus defines us; this includes our value, our authority, our purpose, and our completeness. We have nothing missing and nothing broken. Confidence in this makes our true identity begin to shine.
