As believers living under grace, we can sometimes take for granted what Jesus did for us on the cross. Under Mosaic Law, a system was in place that demanded exact obedience. Perfect performance resulted in blessings, but failure to obey meant curses and death. Many people died until Jesus came to establish His new covenant.
If we don’t understand how God’s mercy and forgiveness impact every aspect of our lives, we can fall back into living under the law. Correctly analyzing and accurately dividing the Word of Truth reminds us of what we’ve been blessed with: freedom from the pressure of constantly performing to please God through self-effort. This was what the law required, but no one can be justified by the works of the law.
The problem with the law is that everything depends on getting it just right, down to the letter. It puts us in a place where striving and acquiring intellectual knowledge feel like the way to stay aligned. At the same time, there’s always the danger of being pulled into man-made traditions and philosophies that distract us from God’s truth—this was what Jesus pointed out to the Pharisees. We must therefore see to it that no one takes us captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy that depends on human tradition.
Even with all the effort the law calls for, it exposed something deep by showing us our inability to live up to God’s standard. If we missed one part of it, even unintentionally, we were still considered guilty, and that weight stayed on us. The system itself couldn’t fully clear our conscience, serving more as a reminder of sin than a remover of it. By contrast, under grace we’re blessed because God no longer imputes sin against us.
Jesus has completely shifted our reality. We’re no longer defined by what we do wrong, but by what He made right. Despite our mistakes, God still calls us saints. Knowing that we’re the righteousness of God changes our entire perspective.

Father, thank You for freeing us from the weight of the law and bringing us into the liberty of Your grace. Help us stay rooted in this truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
