We live in a dangerous world, and sometimes what’s going on around us can make us feel vulnerable. Trying to stay safe on our own, with no guardrails to protect us, is risky and leaves us uncomfortably open. By comparison, relying on God to watch over us provides us with perfect, seamless safety. This is one of the most comforting expressions of God’s love toward us.
The account of Noah is one example. In a world filled with violence and wickedness, God’s desire wasn’t simply to judge evil but to preserve those who trusted Him. Today’s environment is filled with uncertainty, but we can be confident that God still provides refuge, direction, and safety for His people. His protection isn’t based on fear but on His unwavering commitment to us.
When God gave Noah detailed instructions for building the ark, it may not have made sense to Noah at the time, but he still obeyed. “Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it” (Genesis 6:14-16). Every room, window, and measurement mattered because God had a specific plan for preservation. We see something powerful here. When God protects us, He often does so through His wisdom, His guidance, and His instructions.
Sometimes we want instant answers, but God works through preparation. Before the rain ever fell, He told Noah to build. Long before danger arrived, provision was already in motion. We can trust that when God speaks to our hearts, He’s preparing us for things we can’t see yet.
One of the greatest acts of faith is listening when God’s instructions don’t make sense to us. Noah built an ark before there was evidence of a flood. People likely questioned him, criticized him, and thought he had lost his mind. However, God’s protection rests on obedience, not popular opinion.
It’s significant that God invited Noah and his household into the ark. “And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation” (Genesis 7:1). His protection extended beyond Noah alone. God’s heart has always included families, generations, and those connected to His covenant with us. When we trust Him, His influence reaches further than we often realize.
Protection doesn’t mean we never encounter storms. Noah still experienced the flood, the wind, and months of uncertainty, but the difference was that while judgment surrounded him, God safeguarded him. Jesus spoke about the principle of choosing the path most people avoid when He taught about the narrow way (Matthew 7:13). The broad path attracts crowds, but the narrow path requires focus and trust. Noah chose the narrow path when everyone else chose differently.
God never lost track of where Noah was, and He never forgot the covenant He had established. “And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark…” (Genesis 8:1). In the same way, we can rest knowing that He remembers us in every season. No matter what’s happening around us, God remains our refuge, shelter, and faithful protector.
