One of the biggest spiritual battles we face is the necessity of actively resisting the enemy’s attacks on our minds. The world is unsafe; Satan therefore constantly suggests that we’re helpless, at risk of harm, and in danger. However, we live under God’s mighty hand. This isn’t just an idea or a hope, but a promise to rely on in every situation.
It’s God’s will that His children live in perfect safety. Psalm 23:4 tells us that even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we’ll fear no evil because He’s with us. Psalm 91 explains in detail the kind of protection we have. We can rest assured that no matter where we go or what we do, being in God’s will is the absolute safest place to be.
Trusting God gives us a peace the world can’t offer. We know that He’s faithful to keep us safe even when circumstances look uncertain and fear and doubt threaten. When others operate in fear, we operate in faith. “But whoso hearkens to me [Wisdom] shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil” (Proverbs 1:33, AMPC). This anchors our hearts, because tuning out the world’s noise and focusing on what God says makes fear lose its voice.
Holding on to this promise reminds us that our safety is connected to listening and responding to God’s Word. Our confidence rises when we choose to believe that He’s guiding and protecting us at all times every day. Faith in God’s protection over man’s gives us an inner strength even in scary situations.
We can take all kinds of advance precautions and still not be safe. We can do our part, prepare, and use our own brand of wisdom, but ultimately our protection comes from God alone. “The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord” (Proverbs 21:31). This tells us that we don’t have to carry the weight of trying to control everything around us but simply trust in Him. Releasing all the pressure to protect our own selves lets us experience freedom that allows us to live boldly and confidently each day without constantly worrying about what might happen next.
Looking up at the stars like Abraham did when God promised to bless him (Genesis 15:5) reminds us that God’s promises are bigger than anything that can threaten us. If He can keep a promise that vast, then we know He’s more than able to keep us secure and protected. Letting that picture settle in our hearts builds our confidence in His ability to take care of us better than we can care for ourselves. Regardless of what we’re seeing or feeling, nothing catches God off guard, and nothing is too difficult for Him to handle on our behalf.
Protection also involves the right mindset; what we think affects how we respond to life. This is such an important point that God specifically tells us to think like Him. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). When we have His mind, we’re not left to figure things out on our own. We operate in wisdom, which keeps us aware, alert, and protected in ways we can’t fully explain.
The key is to trust where God leads us and to choose to listen to Him. We can expect His protection to surround us, not because of our efforts but because of His faithfulness and love. This gives us peace in the middle of the storm.
