Winning the War of the Mind

Spiritual Growth

We’re in a real spiritual battle, and the battleground is our minds. The enemy isn’t after our material possessions, but what we think. He knows that our thoughts shape our lives by determining our decisions and choices. Just as a bridle and bit control the direction a horse moves in, our thoughts control the direction of our lives; entrusting our thinking to God ensures our lives move in the right direction.

During His ministry, Jesus recognized what the enemy was subtly trying to do. “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). The devil’s strategy is rooted in taking from us by first deceiving us. Recognizing his deception empowers us to stop taking negative thoughts lightly and begin seeing them as coordinated attacks against our purpose. We can’t afford to entertain what contradicts God’s Word, even for one moment.

We win this fight through a deliberate decision to change how we think, not just once but continually. Jesus preached the necessity of this change everywhere He went. “…Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:14, 15). Repentance means changing our minds and thinking differently from what we’ve been taught before. This is powerful, because transformation begins in the mind long before it shows up in our circumstances.

Most of the enemy’s work happens through suggestion and repetition. He keeps presenting the same fearful, doubtful, or defeated ideas until we start believing them—unless we interrupt that process with truth. The truth now, after the cross and Jesus’ resurrection, is filled with hope and joy. “…Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise” (Philippians 4:8, NLT). This creates an environment where God’s peace can operate.

Thinking in line with God’s Word lets us start seeing His will manifest in ways that exceed our expectations. By contrast, the world’s negative mindsets are always ready to press in and invade the godly thoughts we work so hard to hold on to. This is where we labor to rest. We must practice this type of labor consistently, not just occasionally, until it becomes our default way of responding to every situation we face in life.

Thankfully, God has ensured that we’re not left without weapons, but we must learn how to use them daily. “For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds, [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ…” (2 Corinthians 10:4, 5, AMPC). God gave us the authority to challenge anything that disagrees with His Word. We’re therefore responsible for examining our thoughts, confronting the contradictory ones, and replacing them with truth that aligns with who we are in Christ.

Breaking ungodly patterns of thinking is how we maintain the victory Jesus already won for us. This requires commitment, patience, and a willingness to stay in the Word until it changes us from the inside out. Anchoring our minds in the truth of God’s love keeps us from being moved by circumstances.
