“The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law” (1 Corinthians 15:56).

In the Old Testament, the more people tried to keep the law with all its rules and regulations, the more they sinned. Without grace, the law exposes human inability to overcome sin alone.

“For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2:10).

Under the law, perfect performance was required in order to be righteous before God. Under grace, the focus is now on righteousness by faith, not on following a checklist.

“Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved” (Matthew 9:17).

Jesus teaches that new spiritual truths can’t be contained by old, rigid mindsets. For growth and preservation, we must be renewed and open to His way.

“And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23).

God assures us that His plans for us are rooted in peace and hope. He desires to bring us to a purposeful and promising future.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

All truly good and perfect things come from God, who is consistently faithful and unchanging. His light never dims, and His nature remains the same forever.

“There’s a way of life that looks harmless enough; look again—it leads straight to hell” (Proverbs 14:12, MSG).

Some choices may appear right at first glance but have destructive outcomes. God warns us not to trust appearances without discernment.

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:5, 6).

“The flesh” is a mindset hostile to God. Those with this kind of mindset focus on worldly things; conversely, those led by the Holy Spirit pursue what pleases God. A flesh-driven mindset leads to death, while a spiritual mindset brings life and peace.
