August 16
“And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision” (1 Samuel 3:1).
In the Old Testament, messages from God to the people were rare. His Spirit hadn’t yet been given to the general population, but God spoke to Samuel because Samuel’s heart was turned toward Him. We now have direct access to God through the Holy Spirit.
August 15
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints” (Ephesians 1:17, 18).
When we get born again, God reveals to us who He is, and who we are in Christ. We receive our divine inheritance as God’s children, and a hope that the world does not have. Our spiritual eyes are opened, and we receive His wisdom.
August 14
“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you” (Psalm 91:5-7, NKJV).
The world is a violent, spiritually dark place; if we focus on everything going on around us instead of on God’s Word, our courage will fail us. We can be confident that God will never let evil overcome us.
August 13
“The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?... It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes” (Psalm 118:6, 8, 9).
When we trust God in all situations, there’s no need to worry about anything others do. Putting our confidence in Him gives us divine protection and frees us from fear.
August 12
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength” (Isaiah 26:3, 4).
Trusting in just anyone brings its own set of risks, because trust involves being open and making ourselves vulnerable. However, when we trust in God, He’ll never let us down. He gives us His peace and His strength when we rely on Him.
August 11
“He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord” (Psalm 112:7).
No matter where we look, there’s always some upheaval or crisis somewhere in the world. Putting our trust in what we see is like trusting in quicksand; when we entrust our hearts to God, our Rock, we won’t be swayed or knocked down.
August 10
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
When something bad happens that we don’t understand, we know that God will ultimately cause good to come out of it. Regardless of what it looks like at the time, when we trust in His Word, everything turns out well in the end.
August 9
“Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble” (Psalm 119:165, NKJV).
God’s law is the law of love; when we walk in the kind of love Jesus teaches us, we find a peace that transcends all understanding. Following in His footsteps keeps us safe and secure.
August 8
“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Peter 2:2, 3, NIV).
Spiritually, God’s Word feeds and sustains us and gives us life. When we’re new Christians, we need to learn the basics of living in Him and becoming accustomed to our newfound righteousness. However, once we outgrow milk and begin maturing in Christ, we can move on to the meat of His Word.
