“The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7, 8, NIV).

The world depends on its own resources for protection, but they can fail us when we need them. Believers have someone more powerful, reliable, and permanent to rely on—God, Himself.

“Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith” (Galatians 3:7, 9, NIV).

Abraham was known for his great faith and his obedience to whatever God commanded him to do, and God blessed him abundantly. When we walk in faith, we, too, can receive the blessings we pray for.

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee” (Isaiah 41:10-13).

God made this detailed promise to those who trust Him and believe in His Word. Regardless of the negative things happening around us, we can have peace in the knowledge He’ll never leave us.

“And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth” (Colossians 3:2, AMPC).

Our thoughts can influence the direction of our entire lives; the mindset we embrace filters everything we see, hear, and experience. We can either transcend the world and experience the things of God, or remain trapped in what we see around us.

“A calm and undisturbed mind and heart are the life and health of the body, but envy, jealousy, and wrath are like rottenness of the bones” (Proverbs 14:30, AMPC).

The mind is amazingly powerful and controls much of the physical functions of the body. Focusing on God allows us to experience that calmness this Scripture promises, but letting negative emotions control us brings destructive results.

“Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour” (1 Peter 5:8, AMPC).

We’re in a spiritual war with Satan; in order to better withstand his constant attacks, we must be ready for battle. Being prepared keeps him from bringing us down.

“The reverent fear and worship of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom and skill [the preceding and the first essential, the prerequisite and the alphabet]; a good understanding, wisdom, and meaning have all those who do [the will of the Lord]. Their praise of Him endures forever” (Psalm 111:10, AMPC).

A healthy respect for, and awe of, God is the foundation for receiving the gift of wisdom from Him. Godly wisdom allows us to know His plan for our lives.

“The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good” (Psalm 14:1).

The world neither knows nor understands God; the prevailing philosophy today is to refuse to acknowledge the existence of anything it doesn’t know or understand. Choosing to ignore God opens a person up to corruption and evil.

“He who becomes the parent of a [self-confident] fool does it to his sorrow, and the father of [an empty-headed] fool has no joy [in him] … A self-confident and foolish son is a grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him” (Proverbs 17:21, 25, AMPC).

Children who haven’t been taught biblical wisdom will shame not only themselves, but their parents. Parents have a responsibility to teach their children right from wrong using God’s Word.
