August 30
“A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit” (Proverbs 29:23).
The world exalts pride, but the world doesn’t know Jesus. Humility isn’t being a doormat, but agreeing with what God says. A humble attitude like Jesus’ pleases Him.
August 29
“For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 24:6).
We must be careful when seeking advice—bad advice can lead to disaster when we’re trying to make a wise and well-informed decision. When we’re looking for answers and we need good information, the safest strategy is to seek counsel from other godly people.
August 28
“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble’” (James 4:6, NKJV).
The grace that God wants to give us is abundant, overflowing, and nonstop. A proud attitude blocks the blessings He has for us, because pride is offensive and distasteful to Him. Doing what He says is a sign of true humility.
August 27
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee” (Psalm 84:11, 12).
We can trust God to illuminate our way and protect us from evil. Through faith in Jesus, we receive His unmerited, undeserved favor, and all the blessings that go with it.
August 26
“For His anger is but for a moment, but His favor is for a lifetime or in His favor is life. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5, AMPC).
God was angry with sin under the law, but because Jesus took care of sin on the cross, He’s no longer angry. Under grace, God doesn’t punish; His will is to show us favor for the rest of our lives.
August 25
“For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield” (Psalm 5:12).
God is the one who makes us righteous; because He’s righteous, we’re righteous. This flows from His great love for us; righteousness is simply His nature. His favor surrounds us and shields us from harm, both physically and spiritually.
August 24
“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: Hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).
God’s Word is very simple and straightforward; when we’re looking for what’s true and unchanging in a world where “truth” constantly changes, He has the answers. God always keeps His promises to us.
August 23
“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20, NKJV).
Jesus, who was the great “I Am” from the Old Testament, said this to His disciples. There are no limits to the places or situations where God can be found. When we assemble together and call on His name, He’ll be there.
August 22
“Not forsaking or neglecting to assemble together [as believers], as is the habit of some people, but admonishing (warning, urging, and encouraging) one another, and all the more faithfully as you see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25, AMPC).
It’s a mistake to think that because we’ve been saved and are now living under grace, we no longer need to attend church. Believers need to regularly assemble to build each other up, strengthen each other, and receive needed spiritual nourishment to live in a hostile world.
